I’m Chimdi Okoye, a Pharmaceutical Science and Regulatory Affairs Graduate from Kingston University. My grandfather inspired me to study the discipline after hearing my mother's compelling stories about his pharmaceutical career spanning over 40 years.
I believe in the power of contributing towards meaningful initiatives - something instilled in me by my parents. I am passionate about health equity and various causes. I have previous experience advocating for disease prevention, poverty alleviation, gender equity, science to the youth and conducting research to the benefit of under-represented students at my university.
Through my academics and professional experience, I’ve been exposed to the realms of ophthalmology, infectious and non-communicable diseases, and digital health. I’m deeply fascinated by the multidisciplinary nature of global health and enjoy keeping up-to-date with the latest developments through podcasts and newsletters.
I’ve always been drawn to the versatility of a role and find satisfaction in taking on diverse tasks. I aspire to work in roles that combine my enthusiasm for research, scientific writing, project management, and collaboration. I’m keenly interested in healthcare communications, program coordination, clinical research, and health policy.
I was introduced to the Wenite Academy through a LinkedIn connection who had liked a post from their page. Upon exploring the page, I found an information session about their upcoming career programs and grew curious about what they offered.
I’m always eager to attain new knowledge and expand my network. Committing to professional development early in my career is crucial in setting a solid foundation for my future aspirations. I saw areas in my career that needed improvement, and Wenite Academy looked to help with just that. I joined the Career Readiness program to improve my personal branding, networking, interview skills and identify any other blind spots. I also sought to connect with like-minded individuals in STEM who were enthusiastic about professional growth.
So far, Tolu Osobu has covered STEM career prospects, providing extensive insights into different career pathways and diverse roles within each. For example, she used case studies of several career profiles and shared valuable perspectives from interviews on the Wenite and inStem Blog sites. The session has increased my confidence in making informed decisions regarding my career path. With this deeper understanding, I can explore various options and identify areas of interest that best align with my goals.
Additionally, Rose Ichaba delved into personal branding and exploring STEM opportunities. She opened her session with an icebreaker, where we described ourselves using a word, picture, sound or a memory. In understanding my strengths and weaknesses, I can leverage them to my advantage when navigating future opportunities. I can stand out to potential employers and connections by embracing my unique skills and values.
I am grateful for this fantastic opportunity to propel my career forward. I’m anticipating the forthcoming sessions and am excited to see how the program can continue driving my passion to thrive in a competitive field and make a mark in the industry.
